secant=1/cos =denominator/numerator
cotangent= 1/tan= denominator/numerator
or
co secant= 1/sin= hyp/opp
secant=1/cos= hyp/adj
cotangent= 1/tan= hyp/opp
The way I understand it you reverse the positions of the numerator and denominator. It is a different way to right the same ratio.
This is a simple explanation for a simple concept. Well simple in concept form anyways, I don't know how it will be once we start using it for real applications. Its basically also the way I see it, just flip the fraction or find the inverse of the "old" ratio to find the "new" one!
ReplyDeleteGood post Don! You're right about reversing the positions of the numerator and denominator to get these new ratios. Patrick, careful with that word "inverse". I know what you meant, but that word of course has another totally different meaning this year!
ReplyDeletePutting the denominator over the numerator is exactly how I understand cosec, sec and cot!! When we are given cosec, I immediately think of sin which is opp/hyp then flip it to hyp/opp.
ReplyDeleteso far trig seems pretty easy. The way you explained it was really well done DonDon :)
